Crippled and comforted by memory's armor We go ahead and leave it on for one more day Damage can't be undone, what's said can't be unspoken One single word is still the hardest to say Holding on Wondering why We have yet to say goodbye Can't pick of pieces of what we've dropped and broken Two fallen angels can't return to the sky Lost in the night we lie here, waiting on our rescue That's not much left of your dim light to get me by Wasting away Asking why We have yet to say goodbye Another time, another place Had I never seen your face Would I be the kind of man that you see now? But there's nothing left to see Just walk away and let it be Our one last chances have been wasted Long ago our time ran out Looking back now I know there's got to be a reason Water falls on our fire and still it smoulders on Who knows what will be standing when this finally passes? Some things get blown away and some hold on too strong Holding on Wondering why We have yet to say goodbye

Rolling onward Like electric thunder Eyes are blinded By the delta sun On the levee Down in Mississippi When she's calling I've got to run But that's alright I'm at the right place at the right time That's alright Just a good old friend of mine She said come on in Let me show you something She gives me whiskey And blows me away Before she's done, man I won't have nothing She take's my money But she won't let me stay But that alright I'm at the right place at the right time That's alright Just a good old friend of mine Drive me downward 90 miles an hour Can't see nothing Through this delta rain Try to get back home to The one who loves me so true I got a taste of pleasure Now I swallow pain But that's alright I'm at the right place at the right time That's alright She's just a good old friend of mine

Stomping cotton in a trailer down by the ponderosa Heading down a road and drop a load off at the gin You always seemed to stronger than this big, mean world I wish to God I felt that way again Cause this here land's worth more than what you can grow upon it And a man is made of more than blood and bone Till the levee can't hold back the Mississippi And everything we once called ours is gone There's never been a brighter star in Chicot County But every star fades as the night turns into day To shine its light upon the other side of heaven And my thoughts of you are all that still remain Sometimes I pass the sign on that old highway It's like I hear your voice call out across the land "Take your heart back from the hands of this hard world, son. When you face the end one day you'll understand." There's never been a brighter star in Chicot County But every star fades as the night turns into day To shine its light upon the other side of heaven And my thoughts of you are all that still remain

I wasted years dreaming in the dark Watching life go by without a sound Learned to build up walls to hide my heart Waiting for someone to tear them down You opened up a door and you walked right in Rearranged my world and found a space Old troubles won't be beating me again THey vanish every time I see your face I'm losing all control and it's the sweetest thing I've known So hold on if we're gonna take this ride Into a world that throws us off the track Cause baby, I ain't ever looking back As simple as a circle neverending As perfect as a kiss to start the day A comfort when the night sky is descending This love, a light that will not fade away I'm losing all control and it's the sweetest thing I've known So hold on if we're gonna take this ride Into a world that throws us off the track Cause baby, I ain't ever looking back

There's something about your touch that puts me at ease So if you were thinking of leaving, don't tell me so There's something about the way you feel, that makes me feel right As desperation rolls over me, I never want to let go It's not up to me I wish you could see That you are the reason I'm standing Let me hold on When there's nothing left for me to bring down. Let me hold on When there's no chance that I'll win the fight. These times are tough, hey they'll only get tougher My greatest test is ahead When everything's wrong Won't you let me hold on? Now there's drinking to do at the bar, where everyone knows me The bartender pours me a drink as I walk through the door I listen to everyone talk 'bout when things will turn 'round But I don't say a word, disappointment can't hurt me no more I got here at eight And it's getting late But closing time always comes early Let me hold on When there's nothing left for me to bring down. Let me hold on When there's no chance that I'll win the fight. Whiskey will tell me that one day I'll wake up And my life will sing like a song But when it's gone Won't you let me hold on?

It won't do no good To search for secrets you're hiding No matter what answer That I might think I'll find I'm not there anymore When I walk out your door And when you go, You leave me far behind You pull me so close I almost hear what you're thinking Like you'll never let go Like you'll always be mine Still I know somehow You'll only shut me out And when you go, You leave me far behind You just carve up my heart to your liking Before leaving me to heal for a time When you come back again You know I'll let you in And when you go, You'll leave me far behind Seeing you on the street Smashes me into pieces Without a look my way You hang me out on the line I'm only waiting round For you to lay me down And when you go, You leave me far behind

At first morning light The sun has just begun to set Just as precious moments pass We form a memory to forget As water fills us up Thirst will hasten to return It's another dollar spent The day before it's earned Just as every story begins to end The very day it starts Since we've been together, We've been falling apart. With every step we take We're all closer to the end With every hand you shake Some day you'll lose another friend We're running out of time Each time the clocks hand goes around What you spend a life to build Some day comes crashing down Just as every story begins to end The very day it starts Since we've been together, We've been falling apart. Looking back to when your heart was open to me I just knew there was no way that I could fall Now there's an empty space where your love used to be Everything comes to an end girl after all I guess that now's the time To hold you close and say goodbye I can't change your mind So I won't even try It might take a while For a broken heart to learn to trust And to find some other dream To fill the absence of your touch Just as every story begins to end The very day it starts Since we've been together, We've been falling apart
8.
Some will say that we just fell apart But I know that we've grown You still have the sweetest touch Of any woman that I've known You know that I'll think of you as all the years go by Goodbye my sweet Maybelle, Goodbye Goodbye We laughed when times were better In harder times we cried Well I may not have held together But don't say I didn't try Now it's time to go our separate ways No reason to ask why Goodbye my sweet Maybelle, Goodbye Goodbye When I see you passing on the road With someone else at your side I'll recognize the signs And see the magic in your eyes Just pass without a word if you're heart chooses to be kind Goodbye my sweet Maybelle, Goodbye Goodbye

Tonight have I given up sleeping Revisting thoughts in my mind Why is it that I am still burning For something I'm told I won't find? What's holding me down Is what's keeping me safe It's time I abandoned the shore I'm going out farther Come fortune or failure I'm not coming back without more A daylight makes way for the darkness More questions from answers arise I travel in search of a promise As poison rains down from the sky What's holding me down Is what's keeping me safe It's time I abandoned the shore I'm going out farther Come fortune or failure I'm not coming back without more Don't offer up your explanations To why these things are as they are Some people kill pain at the altar Others find faith at the bar What's holding me down Is what's keeping me safe It's time I abandoned the shore I'm going out farther Come fortune or failure I'm not coming back without more

There was a time When you were larger than life And the straight and narrow never was your style So you made your way The winding road turned cold and gray Now there's nothing left to do but walk that mile Love is the reason You can rise to face tomorrow When you feel that your whole world has slipped away The freedom of the life you leave behind Will not compare with what you'll find When you learn to walk your way It wasn't planned For you to be so far so soon If just gets harder now the farther that you go When that time arrives You'll learn to celebrate this life When little hands hold on to yours then you will know THat love is the reason You can rise to face tomorrow When you're sure that you're whole world has slipped away The freedom of the life you leave behind Will not compare with what you'll find When you learn to talk your way I know you'll learn to walk your way

about

It's like Old Crow Medicine Show showed up halfway through Springsteen's recording of Nebraska.

These songs were written and recorded in the early 2000s (when I was in my early twenties), before I was married and long before I had children. These songs cover a lot of ground: the thrill of a new relationship, the pain of a relationship running its course, thoughts on the death of my grandfather, encouragement for a younger brother who was to become a father sooner than planned, getting cleaned out at a Mississippi casino, and the earliest realization that I had a drinking problem.

about

Freddie Phillips Nashville, Tennessee

It doesn't take long for the Mississippi delta to come into focus in Freddie's music. A native of southeast Arkansas, he draws from childhood memories of time spent with friends and family on farms and rivers. After moving to Nashville in the late 1990s, he became disillusioned with the music business. It took getting in touch with the less polished side of country music to gain inspiration. ... more
